Writeup: I guess I don’t even need to explain how important this match will be for this tournament. Together with Kim Clijsters, who is on the other half of the draw, Caroline Wozniacki and Maria Sharapova are being considered as the main contenders to win this tournament. I believe that Sharapova will surely be a very strong contender for the title, but Wozniacki? Not so much. Wozniacki got to the final of last year’s US Open with the easiest cake walk I’ve ever seen to get to a Slam final: Voskoboeva, Martic, Cirstea, Kuznetsova (who choked and lost 2-6 7-6 7-6), Oudin and Wickmayer. Wow. The truth is that Wozniacki is the most consistent player in the circuit, but she lacks a go-to weapon, something which absolutely destroys her when she faces consistent powerful players, who can take advantage of her forehand loopy moonballs. The 6-4 6-3 loss to Na Li in the Australian Open and the 6-2 6-0(!) loss to Petra Kvitova in Wimbledon this season speak for themselves, no? If this wasn’t enough, it is clear that Wozniacki can’t simply beat the best players in the circuit. Her career record of 1-19 against former world number ones says so, so it says her 4-19 record against past Grand Slam champions. And if you think she is improving in those matches, you’re wrong. She keeps losing to them and her only wins in those departments have come against players like an about to retire Mauresmo, a struggling Kuznetsova and Schiavone, who has to be considered as a “special” Grand Slam champion and nowhere near the level of Sharapova. Wozniacki only dropped three games on the first three matches in this tournament, but this only means that the Danish player will come to this match untested and unprepared to face someone with the caliber and power as Sharapova. The Russian player has been regained her power and now that she has her serve back, she can really beat anyone on this tournament, let alone Wozniacki. Barring a major choke, with a rain delay in the middle, against Clijsters in Cincinnati Final and Sharapova would be surely considered as a bigger favorite on this match. The truth is that Sharapova has the perfect game to cause huge problems to Wozniacki, as her crosscourt backhand is extremely powerful and she simply pound Wozniacki’s weak forehand all day long. As that wasn’t enough, Sharapova is a huge fighter and with her champion ability and experience, she will be able to overcome Wozniacki in this department too. Besides that, Sharapova played only two tournaments this Summer (reaching the final in both), while Wozniacki has been playing non-stop, with this week being the sixth week in a row she has been playing. I see Sharapova having an edge on every important factor of this match (matchup, physical shape, experience) and so, I have no doubts in appointing her as the main favorite to win this match. It may not be as their last official hardcourt match in Doha 2008, where Sharapova won by 6-0 6-1, but I believe with the crowd on her side, she will simply overpower Wozniacki, who may be the number one seed of this tournament, but who surely isn’t the best player of this tournament. Take Sharapova to win in here on a Double Dime Selection.
